What 12 Days in Italy Taught Me About Trust, Self-Care, and Stepping Away

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d spend nearly two weeks in Italy—without my laptop—I would’ve laughed. Not because I didn’t want it, but because it just didn’t seem possible. As a small business owner, it’s easy to feel like stepping away means falling behind. But this trip showed me the opposite: with the right support and mindset, it’s not only possible, it’s essential.

Earlier this month, I spent 12 incredible days exploring Italy with a few of my favorite people and fellow business owners. We ate, wandered, took way too many photos of buildings and food (okay, that was mostly me), and soaked in every moment we could.

Here’s what stood out to me:

The architecture.

I was totally taken with the details—the color palettes, the tile work, the weathered textures. Each building felt like it had a story, and it reminded me how good design doesn’t need to shout to make an impact.

The food.

I know, predictable, but seriously—every meal was a moment. Slowing down to eat, to talk, to just be present… it’s something I want to carry back into my day-to-day life.

The space.

The physical space of Italy was beautiful, yes. But the mental space—being away from the notifications and the inbox—was even more powerful. I came back with ideas, clarity, and honestly, a stronger connection to the why behind the work we do.

The pace.

People in Italy move slower—in the best way. They wander, chat with neighbors, sip their coffee without a to-go cup in sight. There’s a natural rhythm of connection and presence that feels so different from the hustle we often normalize. It reminded me how much value there is in slowing down and really being where you are.

And maybe the most important thing: this trip was only possible because I let go. I trusted my team, my systems, and the foundation I’ve worked so hard to build. It’s proof that we don’t have to hustle 24/7 to succeed. In fact, making room for rest and joy outside your business might be what fuels your best work yet.

A few favorite memories:

Whether you’re dreaming about your own getaway or just looking for permission to take a real lunch break today, I hope this post nudges you to remember: you are not your business. You’re a human, with dreams and relationships and stories beyond the work. And those parts of you deserve space, too.

Thanks for reading—and if you’ve taken a trip like this or are planning one soon, I’d love to hear about it.
